Membrane waterproofing is a method of protecting a building by applying a continuous, water-resistant layer over surfaces such as roofs, balconies, bathrooms, basements, foundations, retaining walls, and planter boxes.
The membrane acts as a barrier that prevents water from penetrating concrete, brickwork, or other building materials.
Common types include:
Liquid-applied membranes – Rolled, brushed, or sprayed onto the surface before curing into a seamless coating.
Sheet membranes – Pre-manufactured waterproof sheets bonded or mechanically fixed to the surface.
Correct installation requires proper surface preparation, treatment of cracks and joints, suitable drainage, adequate membrane thickness, and careful sealing around penetrations and edges. When properly installed, membrane waterproofing helps prevent leaks, mould growth, concrete deterioration, reinforcement corrosion, and costly structural repairs.
